Exchange Server 5.5 and Dynamically Assigned Router IP Addresses

Bear in mind this article applies to a server whose IP address on the Internet is constantly changing, not to those of you using DHCP on your internal network.

To use your email server on a dynamically assigned IP address you will need to use both email forwarding and a dynamic DNS client. A dynamic DNS client can be obtained from dnydns.org or a similar organisation or company. If you can use your router or firewall to setup dyndns.org then this will be the best option. Just follow the instructions at their website regarding setting up a username and password which will then be used along with a new host name that you must choose to be a dynamically assigned host name for your internet connection. Once you have chosen your new host name - i.e. newhost.dnsalias.net - then your router or your server (if you are not using a compatible router and use the client software they supply instead) then you must add the new host name as an incoming domain to your SMTP connector and try a test mail to one of your users e.g. username@newhost.dnsalias.net and see if it works from an external source. You can then go to your domain name configuration and put an email forwarder from @yourdomain.suffix to @newhost.dnsalias.net. Bear in mind you must include the 'newhost' part of your dynamic IP forwarder domain as you will be sharing dnsalias.net or whatever you chose with many other people. You should then be able to send and receive to and from your email server as if you had a static IP domain name but as the emails are forwarded at your registrars DNS servers then you must be sure that your email connector accepts email from your dynamically assigned IP domain name from dyndns.org or whoever you are using as it is there your inbound emails will appear to originate, the message headers will still show the originator though, so you will be able to use the reply functions as normal.
